From elemental physics we know the concept of antimatter, where electrons are equivalent to positrons, and neutrons are equivalent to antineutrons. When matter and antimatter meet, they each spark brilliantly then vanish.

When thinking of electrons or positrons, I can picture a little “particle” in my head. However, when it comes to gravitons or antigravitons—the theoretical particles of gravity—I can’t picture anything like this.

Something odd always appears if I try to materialize what transcends the limits of mental representation. This is even more the case when the body is involved. This particular oddness has no place in the world and only a fleeting [non]existence, and could even be said to be a form of “antimatter” itself.

If so, then isn’t it [un]reasonable that its encounter with “matter” would yield a glinting beam of light?

What is Butoh

Butoh is an avant-garde dance that was born in Japan in the 1950s.
Expressing a Japanese physicality and spirituality, the unique style of Butoh was a fresh challenge to the dance aesthetics of the time, undermining them from the ground up. Since then, Butoh has had a lasting impact on the world of dance.
Even now, Butoh enjoys especially high recognition abroad, but within Japan, information relating to Butoh is hard to come by, and the fact is that there are few venues where one can experience Butoh.
Art Complex has revived an ancient Japanese storehouse—an intimate space limited to eight seats—which will be devoted to ongoing Butoh performances, so that Kyoto becomes “the place” to see Butoh dance.

Fukurozaka Yasuo Profile
Butoh artist. Born in Hokkaido in 1971. Started learning Noh theatre in Kyoto at the age of 18, and began a life on the stage in 1996. Since then has collaborated with metal percussionist Ota Hiro, and also worked with various musicians in improvisatory performances. His Butoh piece, The Decay of the Angel (2014) established him a high reputation for his distinctive use of Noh masks. In 2016, he created and is now active with the Butoh group “Hifū”. August 2017 saw him invited to perform in China for the symposium “Origin & Grow : Choreographic Dialogue among East Asian Dancers”.

About the Space
This historic building is in use via the cooperation of Mr. Ukifune Kunihiko, chairperson of the Jikkei Group of Colleges.
A valuable cultural resource, it is a “kura,” or earthenware storehouse that was built in the latter-half of the Edo Period (1603-1868). It managed to escape the riots of the Hamaguri Rebellion of 1864, in which rebels and shogunate forces collided and set fire to the city.
Within the earthen walls of this Kyoto treasure, the resonant sounds of Japanese shamisen blend with visceral dance, and we hope you encounter the rich world of Butoh.

ART COMPLEX
