The Choyo no Sekku (Double Ninth Festival) on September 9th is one of the five seasonal festivals that were introduced to Japan from China in the early Heian period. In ancient China, odd-numbered days were considered auspicious "yang" days, and they celebrated festivals on days with repeated odd numbers such as March 3rd and May 5th. Among these days, September 9th, which is the largest odd number, became known as Choyo (Double Ninth).
As essential element of the Choyo no Sekku is the chrysanthemum flower, also known as the "Chrysanthemum Festival." In ancient China, there was a legend called the "Chrysanthemum Water Legend," which stated that those who drank water from a river where the dew from Chrysanthemum flowers had fallen would attain longevity. This legend was passed down to Japan during the Heian period, and the chrysanthemum has since been established as a flower that wards off evil and symbolizes longevity.
While it is a formal tea ceremony, this event is designed to provide the ultimate hospitality experience for those who have no prior experience with tea ceremonies. It consists of two parts, and you are free to choose either the first part, the second part, or both.
